But that does not mean we know nothing. A new analysis pooled 3,237 observations from 480 resistance-training studies and modeled how measured muscle size changed as weeks of training accumulated.[1] It gives us the clearest broad timeline available so far, along with a more useful answer than gym folklore.
The Short Answer: About 7% at Ten Weeks
At ten weeks, the model estimated an average increase of 6.98% in the size of the muscles researchers measured. The most reasonable plain-English version is about 7%.
That is not 7% more muscle across the entire body. It means a measured muscle, muscle region, or group of fibers was approximately 7% larger on average. A quadriceps measurement cannot be quietly turned into seven percent more total-body muscle.
It is also not a guarantee. The average estimate was precise, but individual study results were spread widely. Some people and muscles grow much more. Others grow very little. An average describes the center of the evidence; it does not write your personal outcome in advance.

Why Strength Can Improve Before You Look More Muscular
Early strength gains are not the same thing as muscle growth. During the first weeks, your nervous system becomes better at recruiting muscle fibers, coordinating the movement, and producing force in the exact pattern being practiced.
That is real progress, but it can make the scale and mirror confusing. You may add weight to a squat or press before a visible change appears. The movement becomes more efficient while the underlying tissue is still accumulating slowly.
Muscle size also competes with body fat, lighting, water, glycogen, posture, and expectations in the mirror. A seven-percent change in one muscle can be physiologically meaningful without producing a movie transformation.

MRI Versus Biopsy: Why the Number Changes
A major finding in the 480-study analysis was that the measurement method affected the result. MRI estimates were generally smaller than estimates from muscle biopsies. At ten weeks, MRI cross-sectional-area estimates were about 6.2 percentage points lower than average muscle-fiber estimates from biopsy.
That does not prove MRI missed the “real” growth. MRI looks at a much larger section, or the volume, of an entire muscle. A biopsy removes a tiny tissue sample and measures a selection of individual fibers. One is a view of the structure. The other is a close-up of a very small neighborhood.
A direct ten-week comparison in 12 untrained men makes the problem clear. MRI found that the vastus lateralis grew, while average fiber size from biopsy did not significantly increase. Changes from the two methods agreed poorly.[2]
Another ten-week experiment found quadriceps volume increases of 3.2% to 7.2% by MRI across different loading conditions.[3] That range sits close to the broad model, but it also shows why one precise number should never be sold as a universal rate.

Ten weeks is not long enough to declare your final potential. If progress slows, the answer is not automatically more exercises, more fatigue, or more days in the gym. It may be better execution, a clearer progression, enough food, or fewer wasted sets.
At six to twelve months, the gap between activity and training becomes obvious. A useful program has records. It can show what improved, what stalled, and which muscles are not receiving enough effective work.
