100 Calories Is Not Always a Serving

Standardized comparisons are useful, but people eat portions, not data points. One hundred calories of spinach is a very large amount of food. One hundred calories of almonds is less than a normal handful.

Calories Are Only One Dimension

Calories tell you how much energy a food provides. They do not tell you how that energy is packaged.

Protein per calorie can matter during fat loss or when appetite is limited. It does not measure total food quality.

Vitamins and minerals support processes from oxygen transport to muscle contraction. A high score still does not make one food complete.

Per-calorie comparisons create a common scale. A typical serving shows what is practical at one meal.

Chicken can cover protein efficiently. Lean beef, bison, and venison contribute protein, iron, zinc, and vitamin B12. Salmon adds omega-3 fats. Vegetables and legumes add fiber and different micronutrients.

How We Evaluate Nutrient Density

Raw nutrition values come from USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy entries for identified preparations such as raw, cooked, canned, or drained. FDA Daily Values provide a common reference point.

  1. Each nutrient is converted to its percentage of the FDA Daily Value per 100 calories.
  2. Each nutrient can contribute no more than 20 percentage points. This prevents one extreme value from controlling the entire score.
  3. The 20 capped contributions are averaged and converted to a 0 to 100 score.
  4. Protein per 100 calories is calculated separately so protein efficiency does not become hidden inside the micronutrient score.
  5. Normal serving values are calculated from the same USDA per-100-gram entries.

This is the Affluent Fitness Nutrient Density Score. USDA and FDA provide the underlying data and reference values. They did not create or endorse this score.

Some USDA entries do not report every nutrient in the formula. An unreported value is treated as zero, so incomplete analytical coverage can lower a food's score. The score is a comparison aid, not a complete judgment of food quality.

What foods have the most protein for the fewest calories?

Lean seafood, poultry, and lean red meat or game generally perform best. Tuna, venison loin, turkey breast, shrimp, chicken breast, and pork tenderloin provide substantial protein for the calories.

What is nutrient density?

Nutrient density describes how much useful nutrition a food provides relative to its calories or serving size. There is no single universal formula, so the included nutrients and calculation method should always be disclosed.

Are high-protein, low-calorie foods good for weight loss?

They can help someone meet a protein target inside a calorie budget and may support muscle retention when combined with resistance training. Fat loss still requires an energy deficit over time.

Is salmon or chicken better for protein?

Chicken breast provides more protein per calorie. Salmon provides somewhat less protein efficiency but adds omega-3 fats and more vitamin D. Which is more useful depends on what the rest of the diet already supplies.

Why compare foods per 100 calories?

It provides a standardized efficiency comparison. It can also exaggerate how practical very low-calorie foods appear, which is why this page includes normal servings beside the standardized view.

Does cooking change nutrient density?

Yes. Cooking can change water content, reduce some heat-sensitive nutrients, and make other compounds easier to absorb. Always compare the preparation you actually eat.
